Maori meanings of symbols

Koru
Koru is a symbol of the new silver fern frond which uncurls as it grows. This represents new life and new beginnings, growth, peace and harmony.
Whale tail Whale tail is a symbol of protection when travelling on all forms of transport. Many whales in an area often meant an absense of sharks. It also shows empathy for conservational issues. Strength but sensitivity. Whales were often represented as an example of family love, with the mother and calf always side by side and touching at every opportunity.
Dolphin Dolphin is a symbol of playfulness, harmony and friendship - a free spirit. Dolphins in large schools often attacked sharks that got close to Maori canoes. Shows affinity to the sea and nature. Provides protection on all forms of transport.
